City Spotlight No. 1 | Brooklyn by Ferry and Foot

I’m feeling a bit ambitious by starting a series, but if there’s anything that will keep me motivated to continue writing, it’s avoiding the embarrassment of having a series with only one post!

Today I wanted to put the spotlight on one of my favorite weekend routes and it starts off with the BEST (at least in my opinion) form of public transportation – the ferry! If you haven’t taken the ferry before, it is fun, scenic, and a great way to experience the city. The only caveat is that it runs less frequently, so make sure you’re not in a rush to get somewhere.

You can take a look at this route map to familiarize yourself with some of the routes. One of the benefits of living in FiDi is being walking distance from Wall Street/Pier 11, which is a hub for all of the ferries that run on the East River. The ones I frequent most often are the routes going from Wall St to Atlantic Avenue/Brooklyn Bridge Park-Pier 6, Dumbo, and North Williamsburg.

To give an overview of this spotlight route, I’ve listed the stops below so you can gauge how interesting it looks to you and I hope it makes it on your list of city wanderings! Here’s the Google Maps route if you want to copy it onto your phone. This route will give you good food, good views, and help you get in your 10,000 steps in a morning!

  1. Ferry from Wall Street to Atlantic Avenue / Brooklyn Bridge Park-Pier 6
  2. Walk to Court Street Bagels (0.7 mile walk – think of it as some morning exercise!)
  3. Enjoy your bagels at Cobble Hill Park (around the corner)
  4. Mia’s Brooklyn Bakery (0.3 miles)
  5. Make a pit stop at City Point to run errands at Trader Joe’s, Target, or maybe even splurge a bit at lululemon (0.5 miles)
  6. Walk through the Brooklyn Borough Hall Greenmarket (Saturdays only)
  7. Snap an Insta-worthy photo at the Dumbo – Manhattan Bridge View before getting on the ferry back to Wall Street from Dumbo!
